In the late 1940s my family moved from Brooklyn to northwest New Jersey. Over the following years they built a number of houses there, and created a series of home movies documenting the events. In spring of 2019 my father and I buried a 400 ft reel in my grandmother’s yard, the same land where the images were originally recorded. Mirroring the customary character of these films, Elegy combines ritualistic process and formal experimentation to create a reflective poem about time, memory and tradition.
